Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lomatium dissectum, commonly known as fernleaf biscuitroot or desert parsley, has a long history of use in traditional Native American herbal medicine, particularly in the western United States. It has been used to address a variety of respiratory ailments, including colds, influenza, and sinus infections. The roots of the plant were often prepared as teas, tinctures, or poultices. Traditional uses were based on observations of its effects on symptoms such as congestion, cough, and respiratory discomfort, rather than on a scientific understanding of infection or immunity.

Despite its popularity in traditional medicine, there is limited scientific validation for the effectiveness of Lomatium dissectum specifically in the treatment of sinus infections. Some laboratory studies have suggested that extracts from the plant may have antimicrobial or antiviral properties, but these studies are preliminary and do not directly address sinus infections in humans. There are no well-designed clinical trials confirming its efficacy for this condition. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional reports.

Because of its traditional use and some supporting in vitro data, Lomatium dissectum receives a moderate evidence score for tradition but low for scientific validation in sinus infection treatment.
