Liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha and related species) has a history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in European folk remedies. The plant's name derives from the "Doctrine of Signatures," an old belief that plants resembling body organs could be used to treat ailments of those organs; liverwort’s liver-shaped leaves led to its use for liver conditions, and by extension, some respiratory complaints. In traditional European herbalism, liverwort infusions or extracts were sometimes used as remedies for coughs, bronchitis, and other upper respiratory tract issues, which could be loosely connected to sinus infection symptom relief. However, there is extremely limited documentation of liverwort being directly used to treat or support sinus infections specifically. Modern scientific evidence supporting liverwort’s efficacy for sinus infections is lacking. There are few, if any, clinical studies evaluating its effect on sinusitis or related conditions. Most current references to liverwort's medicinal use pertain to its mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties demonstrated in laboratory settings, but these findings have not translated into clinically validated treatments for sinus infections. Therefore, while traditional use exists, the evidence is weak and not specific to sinus infection.
