Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Glycyrrhizic acid, a compound found in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), has a long history of traditional use in various systems of herbal medicine, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. It is not specifically or robustly used for sinus infections, but licorice root has been included in herbal formulas intended for respiratory complaints, including coughs, sore throat, and general upper respiratory tract inflammation. Its purported benefits are related to its anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and mild antiviral properties, which could theoretically provide symptomatic relief for sinus congestion or infection.

However, direct clinical evidence supporting glycyrrhizic acid or licorice as a treatment for sinus infection (acute or chronic sinusitis) is minimal. Most scientific research has focused on its effects against viral infections, inflammation, and gastric ulceration, with only in vitro or animal studies suggesting possible benefits for airway inflammation. There are no high-quality human clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for sinus infections. As such, while its use is rooted in tradition, particularly as part of multi-herb formulations for respiratory illnesses, the evidence is weak, and its direct application to sinus infection is not well supported by modern research.
