Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gardenia jasminoides, known as "zhizi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine, including for ailments involving inflammation and "heat" syndromes. In the context of sinus infections (sinusitis), Gardenia jasminoides is traditionally used as part of multi-herb formulations to "clear heat" and reduce swelling and pain associated with the condition. It is thought to have anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties in TCM theory. The fruit of the plant is often included in decoctions aimed at resolving symptoms such as nasal congestion, headache, and facial pain linked to sinus infection. Modern scientific research on Gardenia jasminoides focuses primarily on its bioactive compounds, such as genipin and gardenoside, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. However, there is very limited direct clinical evidence supporting its isolated use for sinus infections in humans. Most available research involves animal models or in vitro systems, and human trials specific to sinusitis are lacking. Thus, while the traditional use of Gardenia jasminoides for sinus-related issues is well-documented, scientific validation remains insufficient. Its use for sinus infection is therefore primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust clinical evidence.
