Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis paniculata
For the health condition: Sinus Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as "king of bitters," has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Its traditional use extends to the management of upper respiratory tract infections, including symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, and sinus congestion, which overlap with those of sinus infections (sinusitis). Historically, preparations containing Andrographis have been recommended for colds, flu, and general respiratory health rather than specifically for sinus infections.
From a scientific perspective, some clinical trials and reviews suggest that Andrographis may help reduce the severity and duration of symptoms in uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infections. However, evidence directly supporting its efficacy in treating sinus infections is limited and indirect. Most studies do not specifically evaluate sinusitis as an outcome, and those that do are often of low methodological quality or have small sample sizes. As such, while there is a plausible rationale based on its anti-inflammatory effects and traditional use for respiratory ailments, robust clinical evidence for Andrographis paniculata’s effectiveness in treating sinus infection is lacking. Overall, its use for sinus infections is justified more by traditional use than by scientific validation.
