Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Ginseng
For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Panax ginseng has a long history of traditional use in East Asian medicine to enhance vitality and sexual function. In modern times, several clinical studies have investigated its potential to support libido and treat sexual dysfunction, particularly in men. Some randomized controlled trials have indicated that Panax ginseng may improve erectile function and overall sexual satisfaction in individuals with erectile dysfunction (ED). The proposed mechanisms include increased nitric oxide synthesis, leading to improved blood flow, and potential effects on hormonal regulation.
A 2008 systematic review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology concluded that there is suggestive evidence supporting the effectiveness of Panax ginseng in improving erectile function compared to placebo. However, the quality of the studies was variable, with relatively small sample sizes and some methodological limitations. Additional research, including a 2012 meta-analysis in The International Journal of Impotence Research, echoed these findings but emphasized the need for larger, well-designed trials to confirm efficacy and safety.
In women, the evidence is less robust, but some small studies have reported improvements in sexual arousal and satisfaction. Overall, while the traditional use is well-established, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence (rated as 3/5) supporting Panax ginseng’s effects on sexual function, particularly in men with mild to moderate ED.
