Evidence supporting the use of: Massularia acuminata
For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Massularia acuminata is primarily used in traditional medicine in West Africa as an aphrodisiac and to support male sexual health, including libido. Local populations have used extracts from the stem and root as remedies for low sex drive and for improving male fertility. Scientific validation for these uses is limited, but a few animal studies have suggested that Massularia acuminata extracts may increase testosterone levels and enhance sexual behavior in male rats. For example, research published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (Yakubu et al., 2008) reported that administration of stem extracts to male rats increased mounting frequency, intromission frequency, and testosterone concentration. However, these findings are preliminary, lack replication, and have not been translated into well-controlled human studies. There is no robust clinical evidence in humans to confirm efficacy or safety for supporting or treating low sex drive. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented, current scientific support remains weak, and the evidence base is insufficient for medical recommendation beyond its folk use.
