Macaenes are a class of bioactive compounds found in Maca (Lepidium meyenii), a root vegetable traditionally consumed in the Andes and widely marketed as a supplement to enhance libido and sexual function. The use of Maca for supporting or treating low sex drive is rooted in both traditional Andean practices and increasingly in scientific study. Several clinical trials have investigated the effects of Maca supplementation on sexual desire in both men and women. A meta-analysis published in "BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine" (2010) reviewed randomized controlled trials and found moderate evidence that Maca improved sexual desire compared to placebo. The studies generally used doses between 1.5–3 grams of Maca root powder per day over periods of 6–12 weeks. The purported mechanism involves Macaenes and macamides, thought to influence hormone balance and neurotransmitter activity, although Maca does not significantly alter serum testosterone or estrogen levels. While some studies have methodological limitations and sample sizes are small, the existing evidence suggests that Maca and its bioactive compounds may have a modest but real effect on improving sex drive, particularly in cases of mild dysfunction or low libido. However, more robust, large-scale studies are needed to confirm these benefits and clarify the specific role of Macaenes versus other constituents of Maca.
