L-arginine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule involved in vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). The idea behind its use for low sex drive (libido), especially in men, is that increased nitric oxide production improves blood flow, which is crucial for erectile function. Several small clinical trials have investigated L-arginine supplementation for erectile dysfunction (ED)—a condition that can contribute to low sex drive. Some studies report modest improvements in erectile function, particularly in men with mild to moderate ED, when L-arginine is taken alone or in combination with other supplements (such as yohimbine or pycnogenol). However, results are inconsistent, and benefits are generally mild.

There is less direct evidence that L-arginine improves libido itself, especially in women or in people without ED. Most supporting research focuses on improvements in erectile function, not sexual desire per se. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that while L-arginine may have a small positive effect on sexual function due to improved blood flow, the evidence is not robust, study quality is variable, and more research is needed. Overall, L-arginine is used for this purpose based on its physiological role and some supporting studies, but the strength of evidence—especially for improving sex drive specifically—is limited.
