Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Icariin is the main active component found in Epimedium species, commonly known as Horny Goat Weed. The use of icariin and Epimedium for supporting or treating low sex drive is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it has been utilized for centuries as an herbal aphrodisiac and to address sexual dysfunction. The traditional belief is that icariin acts to "tonify the kidney yang," a concept in TCM closely associated with sexual vigor and reproductive health.

Scientific studies on icariin's effects on libido are limited and mostly preclinical. Animal studies suggest that icariin may influence sexual behavior by increasing nitric oxide levels, promoting vasodilation, and modulating testosterone production. These mechanisms are similar to those of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, such as sildenafil (Viagra). However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most available evidence for its efficacy in improving sex drive is anecdotal or based on traditional use.

In summary, while there is a historical tradition supporting the use of icariin for low sex drive, scientific validation is insufficient, and the evidence remains limited to animal studies and traditional medicinal practices rather than well-controlled human trials.
