Cistanche is a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine, particularly for addressing issues related to sexual health such as low sex drive (libido). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cistanche deserticola (commonly called "Rou Cong Rong") is classified as a yang tonic, believed to nourish kidney yang and support sexual function, vitality, and reproductive health. Historical texts and materia medica, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," reference its use for treating impotence, infertility, and overall vitality. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed ability to "tonify the kidneys," a concept in TCM closely linked with sexual health and energy.

Modern scientific studies on Cistanche regarding libido are limited but are beginning to emerge. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of Cistanche may increase testosterone levels, improve sperm parameters, and enhance sexual behavior in rodents, likely due to its content of phenylethanoid glycosides and other bioactive compounds. However, robust clinical data in humans are lacking, and most of the supporting evidence is either preclinical or based on traditional use. As such, while there is a strong historical foundation for its use to support sex drive, high-quality human trials are needed to fully validate these claims.
