Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Dodder (Cuscuta chinensis) is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support sexual health, including the treatment of low sex drive (libido). In TCM, Chinese Dodder seeds (Tu Si Zi) are believed to tonify the kidneys and liver, which are considered essential organs for reproductive health and vitality. The seeds are commonly prescribed in herbal formulations to address conditions such as impotence, premature ejaculation, and infertility, which in TCM theory are often linked to "kidney yang deficiency." The reputation of Chinese Dodder as an aphrodisiac and sexual tonic is therefore grounded in centuries of traditional use and is a recurring theme in classical Chinese medical texts.

However, scientific validation for these effects in humans is limited. While some animal studies suggest that extracts of Chinese Dodder may improve sexual behavior, hormone levels, or reproductive organ health, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The available evidence is primarily preclinical and does not yet provide strong support for its efficacy or safety for increasing libido in people. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by anecdotal and historical evidence, scientific evidence remains modest. More rigorous human studies are needed to substantiate its traditional applications for low sex drive.
