Evidence supporting the use of: Bulbine natalensis
For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bulbine natalensis is a South African plant traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and for enhancing male sexual health. Its use for supporting sex drive (libido) has moved beyond traditional contexts due to emerging scientific interest. Preclinical studies in animals have demonstrated that extracts of Bulbine natalensis may increase serum testosterone levels and improve sexual behavior parameters such as mounting frequency and latency. For example, research published in the journal Andrologia (2010) reported increased testosterone and improved sexual function in male rats administered Bulbine natalensis extract. These effects are believed to be linked to steroidal saponins and other phytochemicals in the plant that may stimulate endogenous testosterone production or modulate related pathways.
However, there is currently a lack of robust clinical trials in humans. Most existing evidence is limited to animal models, and human data are sparse or anecdotal. While the mechanisms proposed are biologically plausible, the safety and long-term efficacy of Bulbine natalensis supplements for libido enhancement remain unestablished in people. As a result, while scientific validation is emerging, the evidence base is limited and should be considered preliminary.
