Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Barrenwort, also known as Epimedium or "Horny Goat Weed," is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support sexual function and libido. Historical records indicate its use as an aphrodisiac dates back centuries, where it was believed to invigorate the kidneys and enhance sexual vitality. The traditional story of its discovery involves a Chinese goat herder noticing increased sexual activity among his goats after they ate the plant, which led to its incorporation into herbal medicine for libido and erectile function. Modern scientific research into barrenwort's effects on sex drive is limited but growing. The main active compound, icariin, has been studied in laboratory and animal models, where it appears to have PDE5 inhibitory activity, similar to some pharmaceutical treatments for erectile dysfunction. Some animal studies suggest increased sexual activity and improved erectile function; however, robust human clinical trials are lacking. While preliminary laboratory evidence is promising, this has not yet been validated in large-scale, high-quality human studies. Thus, the use of barrenwort for supporting or treating low sex drive is primarily justified by traditional use, with some emerging but inconclusive scientific support. As with all herbal supplements, efficacy and safety should be discussed with a healthcare provider, especially since active compounds may interact with medications or have side effects.
