Uncaria rhynchophylla, also known as "Gou Teng," is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been used historically for neurological conditions, including convulsions and seizures. In recent decades, scientific studies—primarily in animal models—have investigated its anticonvulsant properties. The active constituents, especially rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline, have demonstrated inhibitory effects on neuronal excitability and modulation of glutamate and GABA neurotransmission. Several preclinical studies (mainly in mice and rats) have shown that extracts of Uncaria rhynchophylla can reduce seizure severity and prolong seizure latency in chemically induced seizure models (such as pentylenetetrazole and kainic acid seizures). Mechanistic studies suggest these effects may be due to modulation of calcium channels and reduction in glutamate-induced neurotoxicity.

However, while the preclinical evidence is promising and aligns with the traditional use of Gou Teng in Chinese medicine for calming the liver and extinguishing wind ("wind" often referring to convulsions), robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. No large-scale randomized controlled trials have been published to confirm efficacy or safety in epilepsy or seizure disorders. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and animal model support for its use, the evidence in humans remains insufficient. Therefore, its use for seizures is supported by both tradition and emerging scientific evidence, though human data are needed.
