Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Jojoba oil has a history of traditional use in skincare, including for various scalp and skin conditions such as seborrhea (seborrheic dermatitis). It is valued in folk remedies for its moisturizing, emollient, and purported sebum-balancing properties. The oil’s chemical composition closely resembles human sebum, which is thought to help restore the natural oil balance on the skin and scalp. There are anecdotal reports and traditional practices that involve massaging jojoba oil into affected areas to soothe irritation, reduce flakiness, and improve overall scalp health.

However, the scientific evidence supporting jojoba oil’s efficacy for seborrhea is minimal. While jojoba oil is recognized as non-comedogenic and generally safe for topical use, there are no robust clinical trials or peer-reviewed studies that specifically demonstrate its effectiveness in treating seborrheic dermatitis or seborrhea. Most of the available support comes from traditional usage and theoretical benefits based on its moisturizing properties. Therefore, while jojoba oil may provide symptomatic relief due to its emollient effects, its use for seborrhea remains primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
