Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lygodium, commonly referred to as climbing fern, has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia such as China and India. Ethnobotanical records indicate that some species of Lygodium have been employed in folk remedies for minor wounds, including scratches and abrasions. The use is generally based on the topical application of crushed leaves or poultices, which are believed by practitioners to have cooling, soothing, or anti-inflammatory effects. However, there is a notable lack of high-quality scientific studies or clinical trials validating these traditional claims. Phytochemical investigations have found that Lygodium species contain flavonoids and other compounds, but their efficacy in promoting wound healing or providing antimicrobial benefits has not been convincingly demonstrated in peer-reviewed research. As such, the use of Lygodium for scratches and abrasions remains rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use for this condition is minimal and primarily anecdotal.
