Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hartstongue (Asplenium scolopendrium) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for various minor skin ailments, including scratches and abrasions. Historical herbals from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods mention the use of hartstongue leaves, often applied as poultices, to soothe and heal minor wounds, cuts, and abrasions. The rationale for its use likely stems from the plant’s astringent properties, attributed to tannins and other phenolic compounds found in the fronds. Astringents can help contract tissue and reduce minor bleeding, which may be beneficial for superficial skin injuries.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Modern research into hartstongue focuses mainly on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects, with very few studies directly addressing topical application for wound healing or skin injuries. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage rather than rigorous clinical trials. Thus, while its use for scratches and abrasions is supported by traditional practices and some plausible phytochemistry, high-quality scientific evidence is lacking, resulting in a low to moderate evidence score.
