Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Desert Lily (Hesperocallis undulata) has a history of traditional use among Native American groups in the southwestern United States, particularly for topical application to minor skin injuries such as scratches and abrasions. Ethnobotanical records indicate that the bulb or gel-like sap of the plant was at times used as a poultice to soothe irritated or damaged skin, owing to its mucilaginous texture and presumed soothing effects. However, there is extremely limited documentation in the ethnobotanical literature, and these uses are not widespread or prominent compared to more commonly used plants like Aloe vera. Importantly, there is no scientific research or clinical data available to validate the efficacy or safety of Desert Lily for treating scratches and abrasions. The traditional use appears to be based on anecdotal observation rather than established medicinal properties or clinical testing. Therefore, while there is a trace of traditional usage for this purpose, the evidence is weak and lacking in robust documentation or validation.
