Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Barbary matrimony vine, also known as Lycium barbarum or goji berry, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, its leaves, fruits, and roots are used for a variety of health concerns, credited with nourishing the liver and kidneys, improving vision, and boosting overall vitality. Traditional herbal texts sometimes recommend topical applications of goji leaves or fruit extracts for minor skin issues, including scratches and abrasions, due to their supposed cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. However, these uses are primarily anecdotal and rooted in tradition rather than rigorous scientific investigation.

Modern scientific studies on Lycium barbarum have mainly focused on its internal use, particularly its antioxidant, immune-modulating, and anti-aging effects. Limited laboratory research has demonstrated that extracts from the plant have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which, in theory, could be beneficial for wound healing. However, there is a lack of controlled clinical studies specifically investigating the topical application of Barbary matrimony vine for scratches and abrasions in humans. As such, its use for this purpose remains mostly traditional, with little direct scientific validation to support its efficacy or safety in wound healing.
