Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesame oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for supporting skin health, including scars and scar tissue. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is considered a base oil for massage and is believed to nourish and heal the skin. Its use for scars is typically based on its moisturizing, softening, and purported anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific evidence for sesame oil specifically aiding in scar reduction or remodeling is limited. Most available research highlights its general emollient properties, antioxidant content (such as vitamin E and sesamol), and mild anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically benefit skin healing, but clinical studies directly evaluating scar improvement are scarce. Thus, while cultural and historical practices justify its use for scars, robust scientific validation is lacking, and current evidence is mostly anecdotal or extrapolated from studies on wound healing or general skin care rather than scar tissue specifically.
