Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rugose Rose (Rosa rugosa) has been traditionally used in various cultures, especially in East Asia, for skin health. Historical records and folk practices often mention rose extracts, including those from rugose rose petals and hips, for promoting wound healing and reducing the appearance of scars. These uses are primarily based on anecdotal reports and longstanding herbal traditions rather than robust clinical trials. The plant is rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and other antioxidants, which theoretically could support skin regeneration and healing.

However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating Rosa rugosa preparations for the treatment of scars or scar tissue. Most modern scientific studies on rose species focus on antioxidant properties, general skin-soothing effects, or wound healing in broader terms, rather than controlled studies on post-injury scar formation or established scar tissue. Therefore, the use of rugose rose for scars is justified mainly by tradition and empirical use, with some supporting in vitro and animal data on wound healing and skin health, but little direct clinical validation for scars specifically.
