Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Centella asiatica has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for wound healing and the treatment of skin conditions, including scars. In the modern scientific context, several studies have investigated its effects on scar formation and tissue repair. The primary active constituents—asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid—have demonstrated the ability to stimulate collagen synthesis and promote fibroblast proliferation, both essential processes in wound healing and scar remodeling.

Clinical studies, though limited and often small in scale, suggest that topical formulations containing Centella asiatica extracts may improve scar appearance, reduce scar thickness, and enhance overall wound healing. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown positive outcomes in the management of hypertrophic scars and keloids, as well as in post-surgical wound healing. The mechanisms appear to involve modulation of inflammation, increased antioxidant activity, and regulation of growth factors involved in tissue repair.

However, while the scientific evidence is promising and supports the traditional use of Centella asiatica for scars and scar tissue, more rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal formulations and dosages. As such, Centella asiatica's use in scar management is justified by both tradition and a moderate level of scientific validation.
