Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pinellia ternata (Ban Xia in Chinese medicine) has been traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for conditions involving phlegm, cough, and various respiratory issues. Its application for rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucosa, often manifesting as a runny or stuffy nose) is based on its reputed ability to "transform phlegm" and "dry dampness." In TCM theory, rhinitis is often associated with phlegm and dampness obstructing the respiratory passages, and Pinellia ternata is included in classic formulas such as Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue-Green Dragon Decoction), which is prescribed for allergic rhinitis and similar disorders.

Modern clinical research directly evaluating Pinellia ternata for rhinitis is limited and of low quality. A few small studies and animal experiments have suggested possible anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects, but these are not sufficient to firmly establish efficacy or safety. The main support for its use remains within the context of traditional practice and formulations, rather than strong scientific validation. Accordingly, while there is a historical precedent for its use in rhinitis, the evidence rating is low due to a lack of rigorous clinical trials.
