Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phellodendron bark, also known as Huang Bai in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal formulations. In TCM, it is considered to have "heat-clearing" and "dampness-drying" properties and is traditionally used for conditions believed to involve "damp-heat," including certain skin disorders, urinary tract issues, and sometimes respiratory conditions. For rhinitis, especially allergic or chronic types, Phellodendron bark may be included in complex herbal formulas designed to address symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and inflammation. These uses are primarily based on traditional diagnostic frameworks rather than on modern biomedical understanding. Scientifically, there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting that Phellodendron bark contains compounds (such as berberine) that have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects, which could theoretically be beneficial in rhinitis. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its use specifically for rhinitis in humans is lacking. Most available studies evaluate multi-herb formulas, making it difficult to isolate the effects of Phellodendron bark. Therefore, while its use for rhinitis is supported by tradition and some pharmacological rationale, there is insufficient high-quality scientific evidence confirming its efficacy for this condition.
