Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus gasseri
For the health condition: Rhinitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
There is some scientific evidence suggesting that Lactobacillus gasseri, a probiotic bacterium, may help in managing rhinitis, particularly allergic rhinitis. Rhinitis involves inflammation of the nasal mucosa and is often triggered by allergens, leading to symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose. The rationale for using L. gasseri is based on its ability to modulate the immune response, particularly by promoting a balance between Th1 and Th2 immune pathways and enhancing regulatory T cell activity, which are often dysregulated in allergic conditions.
A few clinical studies have examined the effects of L. gasseri supplementation on allergic rhinitis. For instance, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported that individuals taking L. gasseri experienced improved nasal symptom scores and reduced markers of allergic inflammation compared to placebo. For example, a 2017 double-blind RCT published in the journal Allergology International found that daily ingestion of L. gasseri improved quality of life and nasal symptoms in people with perennial allergic rhinitis. Mechanistic studies suggest that L. gasseri may help by strengthening the mucosal barrier and modulating local immune responses in the nasal passages.
However, the body of evidence is still limited, with relatively few studies and small sample sizes. As such, while there is some scientific validation for the use of L. gasseri in rhinitis, the evidence is not robust or conclusive, leading to a moderate evidence rating.
