Glycyrrhizinic acid, a primary bioactive compound extracted from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), has been investigated for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to rhinitis—a condition characterized by inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that glycyrrhizinic acid can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), reduce histamine release, and modulate immune cell activity, all of which are implicated in the pathophysiology of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis.

There are a small number of clinical studies and pilot trials which suggest that intranasal or oral preparations containing glycyrrhizinic acid may reduce the severity of rhinitis symptoms. These studies are generally limited in size and methodological quality, often including combination products or lacking rigorous controls. Nevertheless, the biological plausibility is supported by laboratory data, and some clinical benefit has been observed, though it is not yet robustly validated by large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials.

In summary, the evidence for glycyrrhizinic acid in the treatment or support of rhinitis is limited but present, primarily in the form of preclinical and small clinical studies demonstrating anti-inflammatory effects. More rigorous research is required to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
