European Elder (Sambucus nigra) has a long-standing history in traditional medicine for treating respiratory ailments, including rhinitis. Elder flowers, in particular, have been used in European folk medicine as a remedy for symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and inflammation associated with upper respiratory tract infections. The rationale behind its use typically centers on its purported anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic (sweat-inducing), and mild decongestant properties.

However, scientific validation for the efficacy of European Elder specifically in rhinitis is limited. Most clinical studies have focused on its effects in influenza or common cold, rather than allergic or non-allergic rhinitis. Elderberry extract has demonstrated some antiviral and immunomodulatory activity in laboratory and animal studies, and a few small human trials suggest a reduction in cold and flu symptoms duration. Nonetheless, direct evidence from well-conducted clinical trials supporting its use for rhinitis is lacking.

Authoritative herbal references, such as the European Medicines Agency and the German Commission E, recognize the traditional use of elder flowers for “relief of early symptoms of common cold,” which may overlap with some rhinitis symptoms. Thus, its use for rhinitis is justified primarily by tradition, with only weak indirect support from scientific research.
