Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where it is employed to address various respiratory conditions, including symptoms similar to rhinitis (nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing). Traditional practitioners believe cardamom helps clear the sinuses, reduce phlegm, and soothe inflamed mucous membranes due to its warming and aromatic properties. The essential oils in cardamom, particularly cineole (eucalyptol), are thought to have mild expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may provide symptomatic relief in rhinitis.

However, scientific validation for cardamom’s effectiveness in treating rhinitis specifically is limited. While in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of cardamom extracts, there are no robust clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy for allergic or non-allergic rhinitis in humans. Most of the support for its use in this context is derived from traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than systematic scientific evaluation. As a result, while cardamom continues to be used in traditional remedies for respiratory health, its role in managing rhinitis remains largely unsubstantiated by modern medical research.
