Evidence supporting the use of: Benegut perilla (proprietary)
For the health condition: Rhinitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Benegut Perilla is a proprietary extract primarily derived from Perilla frutescens, a plant traditionally used in East Asian medicine for respiratory and allergic conditions. Its use for rhinitis, particularly allergic rhinitis, is supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that extracts of Perilla leaves contain rosmarinic acid and other polyphenols with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. These compounds have been shown to inhibit histamine release and reduce IgE-mediated hypersensitivity responses in laboratory models.
Some small-scale human clinical trials and open-label studies have reported that Perilla extract supplementation can reduce symptoms such as nasal congestion, itching, and sneezing in patients with allergic rhinitis. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed improvements in nasal symptoms and quality of life scores compared to placebo. However, most of these studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and use of proprietary formulations that are not always standardized, making it difficult to generalize findings.
Overall, while there is a traditional basis for Perilla’s use in treating respiratory allergies, modern scientific validation is moderate. More robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in rhinitis. Nonetheless, current evidence suggests Benegut Perilla may offer benefit as an adjunctive natural therapy for allergic rhinitis.
