Arisaema, commonly known as "Jack-in-the-pulpit" or "Tian Nan Xing" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a longstanding history of use in Eastern herbal medicine. Traditionally, processed tubers of Arisaema species are employed to "dispel wind-phlegm" and "open orifices," concepts in TCM that loosely correspond to managing respiratory congestion and sinus issues. In classic herbal texts, Arisaema is included in formulations for conditions characterized by excessive nasal discharge or obstruction, symptoms similar to those found in rhinitis. However, the traditional literature emphasizes its use primarily in cases of chronic or severe phlegm conditions, and it is most commonly used in combination with other herbs rather than as a single-agent remedy for rhinitis. There are very limited modern clinical or pharmacological studies directly evaluating Arisaema's efficacy for allergic or non-allergic rhinitis. The evidence for its use in this context remains mostly anecdotal and based on case reports or traditional use rather than controlled trials. Some laboratory research has investigated anti-inflammatory or anti-allergic properties of Arisaema extracts, but these studies are preliminary and do not provide robust evidence for clinical use in rhinitis. Overall, Arisaema's use for rhinitis is justified primarily by traditional practice, with little scientific validation to date.
