Alpha-pinene is a monoterpene commonly found in essential oils of pine and other coniferous trees. Its use for rhinitis is primarily supported by emerging scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is modest and largely preclinical. Rhinitis, characterized by inflammation of the nasal mucosa, often involves symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. Several studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects of alpha-pinene, suggesting potential benefits in respiratory conditions.

Preclinical research indicates that alpha-pinene can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce airway inflammation. For instance, animal studies have shown that inhalation of alpha-pinene leads to decreased levels of inflammatory mediators like TNF-α and IL-6 in models of allergic airway inflammation, which parallels the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis. Additionally, in vitro studies have demonstrated that alpha-pinene can suppress the activation of immune cells involved in allergic responses.

However, direct clinical studies evaluating alpha-pinene specifically for rhinitis in humans are limited. Most available data are extrapolated from studies on broader respiratory inflammation, asthma, or non-specific airway irritation. While these results are promising, they do not provide robust, high-quality evidence for efficacy in rhinitis. Thus, alpha-pinene’s use is supported by scientific rationale and preliminary data, but well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its benefit in rhinitis.
