Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus gasseri
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus gasseri has been investigated for its role in alleviating symptoms of allergic rhinitis, with a moderate body of scientific evidence supporting its use. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have suggested that L. gasseri may help modulate immune responses involved in allergic reactions. The proposed mechanism involves the modulation of Th2 immune responses and the enhancement of regulatory T cell activity, which can reduce the production of IgE antibodies and inflammatory cytokines associated with allergic rhinitis.
Clinical trials, such as a 2013 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, found that supplementation with L. gasseri significantly reduced nasal symptoms and improved quality of life in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis compared to placebo. Further, a 2014 randomized trial in Allergology International demonstrated that L. gasseri effectively suppressed nasal symptoms during pollen season and reduced markers of allergic inflammation.
While the data are promising, the number of high-quality trials remains limited, and some studies have small sample sizes or methodological limitations. Thus, the evidence supports the potential of L. gasseri as an adjunctive therapy, but it is not yet considered a primary or standalone treatment for allergic rhinitis. Further large-scale, well-designed studies are needed to confirm efficacy, optimize dosage, and clarify long-term effects.
