Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum has been investigated for its potential to support or treat allergic rhinitis, with several clinical and preclinical studies suggesting some benefit. Allergic rhinitis is an IgE-mediated inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa, commonly triggered by environmental allergens. Disruption in the balance of gut microbiota has been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, and probiotics like L. plantarum are believed to modulate immune responses and support mucosal barrier integrity.

A few randomized controlled trials have examined L. plantarum strains (such as L. plantarum CJLP133) in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis. Some studies demonstrate that supplementation can reduce nasal symptoms and improve quality of life, possibly by modulating Th1/Th2 immune balance and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Animal studies also support its ability to reduce allergic inflammation.

However, the quality of evidence is moderate at best, with relatively small sample sizes, strain-specific effects, and varying study designs. Systematic reviews on probiotics for allergic rhinitis suggest there may be a small benefit, but emphasize heterogeneity and the need for larger, well-designed studies. While there is some preliminary scientific validation, L. plantarum should not be considered a primary or standalone treatment for allergic rhinitis at this time, but may serve as an adjunct in some cases.
