Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium animalis
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium animalis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential to modulate immune responses, including those involved in allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis. Several studies, mostly in the form of small clinical trials or animal models, have suggested that certain probiotic strains, including B. animalis, may help balance the Th1/Th2 immune response and reduce markers of allergic inflammation. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Allergy (2011) examined the effects of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis in children with allergic rhinitis and found modest improvements in symptom scores and some immune parameters. However, the sample sizes were generally small, and results have been inconsistent across studies.
The proposed mechanism involves the ability of B. animalis to enhance the integrity of the gut barrier, modulate gut microbiota, and influence systemic immune responses, potentially reducing IgE-mediated allergic reactions. Nevertheless, while there is some promising evidence, it is still preliminary, and larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosing. At present, scientific support exists but is not robust enough for strong clinical recommendations, resulting in a modest evidence rating.
