Evidence supporting the use of: Benegut perilla (proprietary)
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Benegut Perilla is a proprietary extract derived primarily from Perilla frutescens (perilla leaf), a plant traditionally used in East Asian medicine for respiratory and allergic conditions. Recent scientific investigations have begun to explore its efficacy in allergic rhinitis. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that perilla extracts possess anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, including the inhibition of histamine release and the modulation of immune responses involved in allergic reactions. For example, studies have demonstrated that perilla leaf extract can suppress the production of Th2 cytokines and IgE, both of which play a key role in allergic rhinitis pathophysiology.
A limited number of small-scale human clinical studies have evaluated proprietary perilla extracts (such as Benegut Perilla) for allergic rhinitis. These studies report some improvement in symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and rhinorrhea compared to placebo. However, the evidence is not robust: sample sizes are small, studies are often sponsored by manufacturers, and independent replication is lacking. No large, high-quality randomized controlled trials have conclusively established its efficacy or safety. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence to support the use of Benegut Perilla for allergic rhinitis, the strength of evidence is modest (rated 2 out of 5), and further rigorous research is needed.
