Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Asarum sieboldii, also known as "wild ginger" or "saishin" in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. It is a key ingredient in formulations such as maoto (Ma Huang Tang) and shoseiryuto (Xiao Qing Long Tang), both of which have been traditionally administered for symptoms related to rhinitis, including nasal congestion and allergic reactions. These herbal formulas are still used in Kampo (Japanese traditional medicine) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis and the common cold.

The proposed mechanism by which Asarum sieboldii may help with rhinitis is attributed to its purported anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, possibly due to active components such as methyl eugenol and safrole. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential inhibition of histamine release and reduction in nasal mucosal inflammation. However, direct clinical evidence for Asarum sieboldii as a single agent in allergic rhinitis is limited, with most studies focusing on multi-herb formulas. Safety concerns, particularly regarding aristolochic acids (known nephrotoxins and carcinogens), have also been raised, leading to regulatory restrictions in some countries.

In summary, while Asarum sieboldii has traditional backing for its use in allergic rhinitis, the scientific evidence remains limited and indirect, thus warranting a moderate evidence rating of 2/5.
