Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The Sichuan Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Huai Hua." In TCM, parts of the plant—including its flowers and buds—are often used for their purported anti-inflammatory and hemostatic properties. While the primary historical indications are for bleeding disorders, hemorrhoids, and hypertension, some TCM practitioners have also used extracts or preparations of Sichuan Pagoda Tree as adjunctive therapy for inflammatory conditions, including joint pain and, less commonly, rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This traditional use is largely based on the TCM concept of “clearing heat and cooling the blood,” which sometimes overlaps with the treatment of autoimmune or inflammatory diseases. Scientific evidence supporting the use of Sichuan Pagoda Tree specifically for RA is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin in the plant, which possess general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, there are no robust clinical trials directly evaluating its efficacy in RA patients. Thus, while traditional medicine incorporates the plant in broader anti-inflammatory contexts, its use for RA relies primarily on traditional knowledge with only weak indirect scientific support. More rigorous human studies would be needed to validate its effectiveness for rheumatoid arthritis.
