Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sarsaparilla refers to several species in the Smilax genus, historically used in various traditional medicine systems, including those of Central and South America and traditional Chinese medicine. Its roots have been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including joint pain and rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Historical use in the 16th to 19th centuries included its application for treating syphilis and as a general "blood purifier," often extending to conditions characterized by chronic inflammation or pain, such as RA. However, modern scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for rheumatoid arthritis is limited and largely anecdotal. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory compounds in sarsaparilla, but these findings have not translated into robust clinical evidence in humans for RA treatment. There are no high-quality randomized controlled trials or systematic reviews affirming its effectiveness for rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, while sarsaparilla’s use for RA is rooted in traditional practices, it lacks convincing scientific validation for this purpose.
