Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hellebore, particularly species such as Helleborus niger and Helleborus officinalis, has a history of use in traditional European herbal medicine dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. Historically, hellebore preparations were used to treat a variety of ailments, including joint pain and inflammatory conditions, which today would include rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These uses were often based on the plant’s strong purgative and emetic properties, as well as a belief in its ability to “cleanse” the body of disease. However, hellebores are highly toxic, containing compounds such as helleborin and hellebrin, which can cause severe gastrointestinal and cardiac effects. Modern scientific research does not support the safety or efficacy of hellebore for RA; clinical trials are lacking, and its toxicity makes it unsuitable for therapeutic use. Thus, while hellebore’s use for RA is rooted in tradition, there is minimal scientific evidence to support it, and significant safety concerns exist. As such, it is not recommended in contemporary herbal practice for rheumatoid arthritis.
