Evidence supporting the use of: European White Birch
For the health condition: Rheumatoid Arthritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European White Birch (Betula pendula) has a history of traditional use in various European and Asian folk medicines, including as a remedy for inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Traditional herbal medicine systems have utilized birch leaves, bark, and sap for their diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. The rationale often cited is the plant’s flavonoids and saponins, which are believed to have mild anti-inflammatory effects. However, there is currently very limited scientific research specifically validating its efficacy for rheumatoid arthritis. Most available studies focus on birch’s general anti-inflammatory potential in vitro or in animal models, rather than in controlled human clinical trials for RA. As such, while its use is supported by tradition, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence to substantiate significant benefit in managing rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, the use of European White Birch for RA is primarily justified by traditional practices, with a low evidence rating due to the absence of high-quality clinical data.
