Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenia species, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in South Asia, including Ayurveda and folk medicine. In these traditions, Bergenia is used for a variety of ailments, including kidney stones, urinary disorders, and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Herbalists have employed Bergenia preparations for their purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which are believed to help manage symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Some preclinical studies have reported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Bergenia extracts in laboratory and animal models, with certain constituents (such as bergenin) showing modulation of inflammatory mediators. However, there is a lack of well-controlled clinical trials or robust scientific data directly supporting the efficacy of Bergenia for rheumatoid arthritis in humans. Its use for RA is therefore primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation. The traditional evidence is moderate given its longstanding role in ethnomedicine, but it is not supported by high-quality modern clinical research.
