Rating (out of 5): 2

Baicalein is a flavonoid compound derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a plant commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the context of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), there is emerging scientific evidence—primarily from preclinical studies—suggesting that baicalein may have beneficial effects. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that baicalein possesses anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Specifically, baicalein has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), suppress the activation of NF-κB signaling pathways, and reduce oxidative stress, all of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of RA. Some animal models of arthritis report that baicalein reduces joint swelling and tissue damage.

However, the evidence for baicalein’s efficacy in treating rheumatoid arthritis in humans is limited. There are no large-scale, high-quality clinical trials directly assessing its effects in RA patients. Most available studies are preclinical, conducted in cell cultures or rodent models. While these findings are promising, they are insufficient to conclusively recommend baicalein as a treatment for RA in clinical practice. In summary, baicalein is supported by preliminary scientific evidence (mostly preclinical), but robust clinical validation in humans is lacking.
