Yohimbine is an alkaloid derived from the bark of the African Yohimbe tree (Pausinystalia johimbe). Its primary traditional use has been as an aphrodisiac in West African medicine, but more importantly, there is scientific evidence supporting its effects on the male reproductive system, particularly in treating erectile dysfunction (ED). Yohimbine acts as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist, which can increase blood flow and nerve impulses to the penis. Clinical studies, including double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, have shown that yohimbine can be more effective than placebo in improving mild to moderate erectile dysfunction in some men. However, its efficacy is generally modest compared to modern phosphodiesterase inhibitors like sildenafil (Viagra).

Yohimbine is not a primary treatment for infertility or other reproductive system disorders, but its main scientifically validated use is in the context of sexual function. The evidence base includes several meta-analyses and reviews, such as a 1998 meta-analysis published in the journal International Journal of Impotence Research, which concluded that yohimbine has a small but significant effect on ED. However, yohimbine is associated with significant side effects, such as increased blood pressure, anxiety, and heart rate, which limit its use.
