Evidence supporting the use of: Sesame Seed
For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sesame seed (Sesamum indicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, where it is believed to support reproductive health for both men and women. In Ayurveda, sesame seeds and sesame oil are considered nourishing and are used to promote vitality, sexual health, and fertility, often being included in diets or herbal preparations for individuals seeking to boost reproductive function or improve libido. Traditional Chinese medicine also regards sesame seeds as beneficial for nourishing yin and supporting reproductive organs.
However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. While sesame seeds are rich in nutrients such as vitamin E, lignans (especially sesamin), and healthy fats, which are important for overall health and may indirectly support reproductive health, direct human studies specifically demonstrating a reproductive benefit are sparse. Some animal studies suggest that sesame oil may have positive effects on sperm quality and motility, possibly due to its antioxidant content, but robust clinical data in humans are lacking. Consequently, the primary justification for sesame seed in reproductive health remains traditional, with moderate support from nutritional science but insufficient direct clinical evidence.
