Phyllanthus species, particularly Phyllanthus niruri and Phyllanthus emblica, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and folk medicine in various cultures. In these systems, various Phyllanthus species are employed for a range of reproductive health issues. For example, Phyllanthus emblica (amla) is considered a general tonic and is sometimes used in formulations intended to support fertility or address menstrual disorders. Phyllanthus niruri has been used traditionally for its purported effects on genitourinary health, including as an adjunct in managing urinary tract infections and conditions that may indirectly influence reproductive health.

However, the traditional uses are primarily based on empirical knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous clinical trials. Scientific studies on Phyllanthus species have largely focused on their hepatoprotective, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, with relatively few studies directly examining their impact on the reproductive system in humans.
