Ligustilide is a major bioactive compound found in several traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, most notably Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong). These herbs have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the reproductive health of women, with a focus on regulating menstruation, alleviating menstrual pain, and addressing symptoms related to reproductive system imbalances. The traditional use is largely based on empirical practice and TCM theory rather than rigorous scientific validation. Modern research has identified ligustilide as one of the key constituents responsible for some of the biological activities of these herbs, such as anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and vasodilatory effects, which could theoretically benefit reproductive health (e.g., by reducing uterine muscle spasms). However, most studies to date have been in vitro or in animal models, and there is a lack of robust clinical evidence directly linking ligustilide to improved reproductive system function in humans. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains limited, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for reproductive health is modest.
