Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Leptin is a hormone primarily produced by adipose (fat) tissue that has a well-established role in energy homeostasis and appetite regulation. Its involvement in the reproductive system is scientifically validated. Leptin serves as a key metabolic signal to the hypothalamus, helping to regulate the onset of puberty, fertility, and reproductive function, especially in females. Scientific research shows that adequate leptin levels are necessary for normal reproductive function: for example, individuals with congenital leptin deficiency or very low body fat (such as in anorexia nervosa) often experience hypothalamic amenorrhea, where menstruation stops due to insufficient leptin signaling. Supplementation or normalization of leptin levels in such individuals can restore reproductive hormone secretion and menstrual cycles. Animal studies, as well as human clinical observations, have demonstrated that leptin acts on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to regulate secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Thus, leptin is considered a crucial permissive factor for reproductive capability, signaling the adequacy of energy stores to support reproduction. However, while the physiological role of leptin in the reproductive system is clear, its use as a therapeutic supplement for reproductive issues is not widespread due to the complexities of leptin resistance and the multifactorial nature of reproductive dysfunction. Nonetheless, the scientific evidence for leptin’s role in supporting the reproductive system is strong.
