Lactobacillus, a genus of beneficial bacteria commonly found in the human microbiome, has been studied for its role in supporting the reproductive system, particularly female reproductive health. Scientific evidence suggests that certain Lactobacillus species are the predominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal microbiota. These bacteria help maintain an acidic pH through lactic acid production, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic organisms and reduces the risk of infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Several clinical studies have demonstrated that oral or intravaginal administration of specific Lactobacillus strains (such as L. crispatus, L. rhamnosus, and L. reuteri) can help restore or maintain the normal vaginal flora, particularly after disruption due to antibiotics or infection. However, the benefits are strain-specific, and evidence is stronger for some strains than for others. The use of unspecified Lactobacillus for reproductive health is supported by moderate scientific evidence, mainly for prevention and adjunct treatment of vaginal infections. There is less direct evidence for other reproductive system benefits. Overall, while not all Lactobacillus strains are equally effective, the genus as a whole has a scientifically validated role in supporting aspects of reproductive system health, particularly in women.
