Inositol, particularly in the form of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol, is supported by a significant body of scientific research for its role in supporting the reproductive system, especially in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that inositol supplementation can improve ovarian function, restore menstrual regularity, and enhance fertility in women with PCOS. The proposed mechanisms include improving insulin sensitivity, reducing hyperandrogenism (high levels of male hormones), and supporting oocyte (egg) quality. Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol are both involved in cellular signaling pathways that are crucial for normal reproductive function.

For example, a meta-analysis published in Gynecological Endocrinology (2016) concluded that myo-inositol improved ovulation rates and metabolic parameters in women with PCOS. The evidence for inositol’s benefits in male fertility is weaker but emerging, mainly focused on sperm quality and motility.

Overall, current clinical evidence justifies the use of inositol as an adjunct in supporting reproductive health, particularly for women with PCOS. However, while results are promising, inositol is not a panacea and works best as part of a broader lifestyle and medical management approach. The evidence base is strong enough to warrant its use, especially under medical supervision.
